Lon Kruger – (2004-2011)
Lon Kruger was hired as the 14th head coach in UNLV men’s basketball history (the 10th full-time head coach) in 2004. In his seven years with the Runnin’ Rebels he compiled a 161-71 (.694) record and led the team to four NCAA Tournament appearances in his last five years. His third season in Las Vegas (2006-07), Kruger led UNLV to its best season is 16 years as the team finished 30-7 overall, won the MW Tournament Championship, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991. That team also finished the season ranked in the polls (14th in Coaches’ and 19th in AP) for the first time in 14 years. The following season, UNLV became the first MW school to repeat as conference tournament champions and advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s
second round, losing to eventual national champion Kansas. Kruger led UNLV to wins in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time since 1990 and 1991.
